Breck Wide Receiver Is Poised For Big Senior Campaign

Kasey Robinson says he's trying to increase his strength and weight.

Kasey Robinson, a 5-foot-10, 185-pound wide receiver from Breck, is one of the top pass catchers in the state. Robinson helped lead the Mustangs to a 9-3 mark last season and recently talked to Patch.com about his senior season, hopes of earning a Division I scholarship and working out at the Minnesota Vikings training camp.

Robinson caught 69 passes for 889 yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior. He can expect his numbers to increase with the graduation loss of Steven Kiesel, who had a metro-high 94 receptions for 1250 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Robinson will catch ball from KARE 11 preseason All-Metro choice Austin Lommen, who threw for a metro-best 3080 yards and 35 scores.

Breck head coach Brett Bergene has high expectations for Robinson this season.

“Kasey is someone who has great hands,” Bergene said. “Mentally buys into the game. Buys into offensively what we are trying to do and accomplish."

The Mustangs added Brooklyn Center graduate and Biletnikoff Award winner Marcus Harris as receivers coach a couple of years ago.

"He has really brought Kasey along. (Robinson) has great hands. We are adamant about the routes that we run and we added a little twist with the option routes last year and Kasey was one who got it right away and really understands spacing on the field and does a great job of getting open. ... He is the quickest receiver that we’ve got.”

Bergene admits Robinson's size hurts him a bit in some school’s eyes, but he is working hard to continue to improve himself as a player.

“He is definitely continuing to work on the speed,” Bergene said. “He really wants that 4.5 (40-yard dash). We are clocking him right around a 4.6 and he really wants to get that 4.5. He thinks that could be a deal-breaker for him ...

"One of the things that I have really seen him blossom at this summer is leadership. Our captains were gone most of the summer and Kasey just stepped in. He really took care of the young kids. Did things the right way. Really blossomed as a leader, I think this summer.”

Robinson is hoping that a big senior campaign will pay off in plenty of wins and scohlarship offers.

Golden Valley Patch: How was the first day of practice?

Kasey Robinson: It was good. We just got together and did a quick testing day in the 40s and shuttles and the bench, squat and clean (lifting). We went onto the field and had pass time and figured out our main defense and offense and got things going. We had a little party out there, so it was good.

Golden Valley Patch: How did you do in the testing?

Kasey Robinson: I did pretty well. I was at the Minnesota Vikings’ training camp for the last two weeks, so it was hard to keep up my cardio, but I thought that I was in pretty good shape. For my 40, I ran a 4.6, which I was a little disappointed with. My shuttle, I had a 4.0. For bench, I got 205 and squat I had 305 and clean, I had 205.

Golden Valley Patch: Your uncle, Jeff Robinson, is a scout with the Minnesota Vikings and you were able to work out in Mankato. How much does that help your development?

Kasey Robinson: It was good watching pro athletes work and I picked up a few things from them, too.

Golden Valley Patch: What was that experience like working with Vikings receiver Percy Harvin and Bernard Berrian?

Kasey Robinson: It was nice. Since I was a ball boy, I was assigned to work with the quarterbacks, so I caught about 100 balls a day from the quarterbacks. When we went to one-on-ones, I would watch Michael Jenkins and Percy Harvin. It was interesting because the way they run routes is so much more crisp than you would normally see at a high school field. I’m sure that my routes will be a lot better this year after watching them.

Golden Valley Patch: So when you go back to Breck to catch passes from All-Metro quarterback Austin Lommen, you are probably thinking that this isn’t so bad now?

Kasey Robinson: Exactly. The balls are a lot smaller, too. It was a great experience.

Golden Valley Patch: You always have a high-powered offense at Breck. As a wide receiver, you probably couldn’t ask to be on a better team.

Kasey Robinson: Oh, yes. I am hoping that we go to state this year. Our defense is looking a little bit iffy, but our offense will still be strong, so we’ll just have to make up for it and make sure that we don’t have any turnovers on offense and I think we’ll be fine.

Golden Valley Patch: Your wide receiver coach, Marcus Harris, was an outstanding receiver in high school and college. How much does it help making someone who knows the game like him help you as a receiver?

Kasey Robinson: It helps a lot. Before he came in, my route were, I’m not going to lie, pretty bad. He helped me sharpen them up a lot. He knows a lot about the game and it really does help having a veteran receiver like that as a coach. It is really nice.

Golden Valley Patch: What football camps did you make this summer?

Kasey Robinson: I went to Iowa State, Iowa, Colorado and the “U.”

Golden Valley Patch: What other colleges are you hearing from besides those schools?

Kasey Robinson: North Dakota, South Dakota and a little bit of Boston College, but not that much and I recently got something from Colorado State.

Golden Valley Patch: What are the schools saying to you? Do they want to see more tape?

Kasey Robinson: They want to see the first three games and they said if they see what they like and what they want to see, they will probably offer me.

Golden Valley Patch: Are you going to try to go to any college games as a visitor?

Kasey Robinson: I am probably going to make it to a couple of Iowa State games and maybe a Wyoming game. I’m not sure about that one, though. Probably a U game.

Golden Valley Patch: What is the main thing that you are working on to improve yourself as a player and earn that college scholarship?

Kasey Robinson: Right now, I’m just trying to work on my size and getting my weight up a lot more and my strength.

Golden Valley Patch: Do you come from a football family?

Kasey Robinson: My grandpa (Richard Robinson) played at Augusta and my dad (Rich Robinson) played at Kansas. My uncle played at Northwestern.

Golden Valley Patch: A lot of people assume that you are related to former Breck standout Brandon Robinson, who went on to to shine at Boston College. Do a lot people think that you are brothers or cousins?

Kasey Robinson: Yes. A lot of people assume that.

Golden Valley Patch: What are the main team goal that you have this season?

Kasey Robinson: Basically, be undefeated at home. We really want to beat DeLaSalle. That is a big goal right there and make it to state. Beat our rivals, Blake.
