Nothing can disrupt a beautiful day like a swarm of BEES! Right now, we have an underground nest of yellowjackets in our backyard (we call it the "B-Hole!) and I was stung several times while mowing.
Getting rid of an underground nest is not an easy task. I've heard a ton of remedies, including dumping kerosene down the hole and lighting it on fire! (SO scary!) It seems that no matter what you do, they find a way out and return to the nest.
My BRILLIANT sister Marilyn had the best idea that I've ever heard, and it appears to be working! She suggested that by inverting a large glass vase or bowl over the opening of the nest, in a few weeks the hive would be completely killed off. We like to call this method "UNDER THE DOME" and I like it the best because it's more environmentally friendly than dumping gasoline, kerosene, pesticide etc. into the ground.
You have to wait until after dark and make sure that you don't see any bees flying in and out of the nest... that means that they are all inside and you are less likely to be stung when approaching the hole. You can use any large glass vase or bowl - as long as it is completely clear glass. The next day you will see the bees flying around in the "dome" and you'll know that it's working! The glass is important because the bees will not try to dig their way around it. If you cover the hole with anything that isn't completely transparent, these little buggers will find another way out! They are really good DIGGERS! Because they can see sky through the glass, the bees believe that they can fly away, so they don't try to dig another route. Eventually, you'll see fewer and fewer bees, the nest will die off, and you'll be able to return to your normal, everyday life. Now if I could just figure out how to keep them from swarming around my recycle bins! - See more at: http://ablittlelife.blogspot.com/2013/08/getting-rid-of-underground-wasp-nest-or.html#sthash.oGjsBKf...
