Golden Valley Council Approves Proclamation Declaring April Parkinson’s Awareness Month

At its March 4, 2020 meeting, the Golden Valley City Council approved a proclamation declaring April as Parkinson’s Awareness Month in Golden Valley.

In 2016, the National Parkinson Federation of Minnesota designated Golden Valley a Parkinson Friendly Community based on the accessibility of City parks and trails as well as training provided to police, firefighters, and first responders about how to recognize basic Parkinson symptoms.

This new proclamation reinforces Golden Valley’s commitment to supporting those living with Parkinson’s by working to increase understanding of the disease and by helping people remain active and engaged in the community for as long as possible.

Parkinson’s disease is a chronic, progressive, neurological disease and is the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the United States. It is estimated to affect approximately one million people in the United States, and the prevalence of this disease is expected to rise to 1.2 million people by 2030.
