Golden Valley Police: Be Safe Tonight
Police have issued several ways families can have a fun and safe Halloween.

Editor's Note: There is no official trick-or-treating time in Golden Valley, but police suggest bringing the kids home once it gets dark.
Later today, many of us will see trick-or-treaters going door to door throughout Golden Valley. And most of us will be happy to share lots of treats and plenty of tradition with them.
But let's face it. Thousands of kids in disguise will be talking face-to-face with thousands of strangers, and then they'll get candy from that stranger.

We pride ourselves on our low crime rate and on our love of tradition in our community, but say it's still important to be proactive to prevent problems or even an emergency.
"Crime doesn't discriminate," Joanne Paul, crime analyst with the Golden Valley Police Department said. "It can happen anywhere, at any time and to anybody. So just be aware."

Paul says the best way to be proactive is to make a plan, and she suggests using these tips from the police department:
- Have at least one parent act as a chaperone, and never let a child trick-or-treat alone.
- Stay on the sidewalks or on the edge of the road. Walk on the left side of the road facing traffic and be careful crossing the streets.
- Wear make-up rather than a mask. If you have to wear a mask, take it off before you cross a street. A mask can keep you from seeing and hearing well.
- Don't cut through people's back yards. People often keep their dogs in their back yards and back yards are often not as well lit.
- Trick-or-treat before it gets dark and/or carry a flashlight with you so you can see.
- Trick-or-treat only at homes where the outside lights are on and you know the people.
- Wait until you get home to eat your treats so parents can give your candy and treats a quick inspection.
- Most importantly, have a safe and fun Halloween!
