About 25 percent of materials currently put in the trash in Hennepin County are suitable for organics recycling, but many end up in the landfill because they are not separated from the waste stream. Similar to curbside recycling service, a curbside organics service would pick up compostable material on a scheduled basis. This includes food scraps, greasy or soiled paper products, and other compostable products.

Recycling organic materials presents a large opportunity to reduce what ends up in landfills and, ultimately, emissions. Materials are mixed with other ingredients at an industrial composting facility, where they break down into a nutrient-rich compost over a six-month period.
