The restoration will largely include removal of buckthorn, an invasive plant that has quickly become a dominant component of the nature area. The influx of buckthorn has shaded out the majority of the ground cover in the area, prevented forest regeneration, and contributed to increased erosion and decreased quality of wildlife habitats.
After removal, the City plans to establish native grasses, sedges, forbs, and shrubs to provide habitat for various waterfowl and pollinator species and improve water quality through vegetative buffers and enhanced ground cover.
