Hennepin County Surveying Residents On Rumble/Mumble Strip Noise Levels

The test will determine the effectiveness of the new strips and the noise experienced by nearby residents, bicyclists, and drivers.

July 20, 2020

To better distinguish travel lanes from bike lanes, Hennepin County is testing the use of “mumble strips” on Glenwood Ave between Theodore Wirth Pkwy and Xerxes Ave. While mumble strips are quieter than the rumble strips on highways, they still provide drivers with an audible, tactile warning when leaving the travel lane.

The test will determine the effectiveness of the new strips and the noise experienced by nearby residents, bicyclists, and drivers. Noise levels will be measured before and after installation.

Hennepin County is also conducting a short survey for residents to share their experiences with the new mumble strips. The survey will be available on the Hennepin County website mid-July and will be open for one month.
