Leaky faucets, faulty irrigation systems, and old plumbing are all things that can make your water meter move, even when you don’t want it to. Use the information below to help save on water and on your bills.

The City of Golden Valley recommends residents track their water usage. Frequent tracking can help in a number of ways.

• Avoid surprises or discrepancies on your utility bill.
• Detect potential problems (like a leaky toilet).
• It can also influence you and your family to use less water, thus saving money and the environment.

Make Water Usage Tracking Fun

With more residents working from home or distance learning, more water is being used in Golden Valley. Make usage tracking a family activity and see where you can save on water.

1. Assign each household member one week out of the month.
2. This person is tasked with recording how the water in the home is used and how often (dishwasher and washing machine loads, average toilet flushes per day, average length of the showers per day, etc).
3. Record the reading on your water meter either daily, every other day, or weekly.
4. At the end of the month, look back through your records to see where your water usage spiked, and brainstorm ideas on how you can cut out some of those water wasting items.
