Local Schools, Neighborhoods & Nonprofits Served by Calvary Works

On Sunday, May 3, more than 300 volunteers came together in the spirit of community partnership to serve at 21 different project sites.

GOLDEN VALLEY, MINN. (May 4, 2015) – On Sunday, May 3, more than 300 volunteers came together in the spirit of community partnership, then scattered all over the metro area to 21 different service project sites, including local schools, neighborhoods and nonprofits. Called “Calvary Works,” the effort was sponsored by Calvary Lutheran Church, Golden Valley, Minn.

“One of Calvary’s key values is to build local and global partnerships that help us live out our mission,” said the Rev. Jeff Krogstad, Calvary’s senior pastor. “Calvary Works was a great visible demonstration of this value in action.”

Projects included hosting an ice cream social for the residents of Good Samaritan Society, building an outdoor art display at the YMCA, power-washing the bleachers at Robbinsdale Cooper High School, sorting donations at ARC Value Village, and cleaning up the grounds and planting flowers at numerous locations around the area. Calvary also hosted three projects at its own facility to allow people with mobility issues to take part in the day; those volunteers assembled health kits for Lutheran World Relief, rolled bandages for Global Health Ministries and packaged bulk laundry soap for the PRISM food shelf.

“We believe that all ages and abilities can serve each another and the world in meaningful, life-changing ways,” said Krogstad. “There is something incredibly unifying about working side by side and shoulder to shoulder with people we otherwise might not know.”

In addition to Calvary Works, Calvary offers many year-round opportunities for community service and partnership. From hosting Feed My Starving Children food-packing events to building homes through Habitat for Humanity to offering a free weekly Community Meal, the church has a full calendar of activities and welcomes everyone, including the general public, to take part.
