Meadow Lake Students 'Head West'

An interactive learning experience brings students to the Oregon Trail.

On Tuesday, fifth-graders at Meadow Lake Elementary School are taking a trip on the Oregon Trail—via New Hope.

Students will spend the day at Dorothy May Park dressed in period costumes and taking part in period activities—churning butter, eating food of the era, panning for simulated gold and pulling covered wagons in laps around the park.

“By participating in this event, [students] will be able to see firsthand what it was like to be a pioneer traveling o the Oregon Trail back in the 1800s,” said Jean Braun, the fifth-grade teacher who organized the day. “Tentatively, we’ve set 100 [wagon] laps as the goal to make it to Oregon.”
