Social Factors and Heart Disease: What's the Connection?
Researcher to explain the connection during program at Covenant Village of Golden Valley, a retirement community in Golden Valley
Covenant Village of Golden Valley, a faith-based, not-for-profit continuing care retirement community administered by Covenant Retirement Communities, will host researcher and assistant professor Dr. Benjamin Capistrant on Tuesday, March 10, at 1 p.m., as he discusses the connection between social factors and heart disease.
Capistrant, whose research focuses on social determinants of aging and non-communicable disease, will share with guests how social factors impact the development of heart disease. Specifically, how do family dynamics, race/ethnicity and education affect health outcomes associated with cardiovascular disease?
Capistrant is an assistant professor in the Division of Epidemiology and Community Health at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. He earned his master’s and doctorate in social epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, and later received postdoctoral training in demography and epidemiology of aging from the Carolina Population Center at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His research focuses on social determinants of aging and non-communicable diseases; he is interested in how social factors like family dynamics, race/ethnicity, and education are associated with health outcomes like disability, cognitive function, and cardiovascular disease.
