Sports Roundup: Rough Stretch For Several Local Teams

A number of Golden Valley-area athletic squads have their share of trouble heading into the third full week of September as the autumn sports season kept hurtling towards its conclusion.

Hopkins Boys Soccer

The Hopkins boys soccer team lost 1-0 to Prior Lake on Saturday and 5-1 to Wayzata on Tuesday to fall to 2-6-2 on the season. 

Heading into Tuesday, Juan Montero and Christian Abundis were tied for the Royals' scoring lead with one goal apiece.

Hopkins Girls Soccer

The Hopkins girls soccer team fell to .500 following a 1-0 loss to Prior Lake last Saturday and 3-0 to Wayzata on Tuesday that gave the Royals a 3-3-4 mark this autumn.

Prior to Tuesday, Jillaine DeYoung and Emily Caouette led the team with three goals apiece.

Hopkins Volleyball

Fifth-ranked Wayzata swept the Hopkins volleyball team (18-25, 18-25, 17-25) on Tuesday to drop the Royals to 5-6 this season. Individual statistics were not made available.

Hopkins Girls Tennis

The Hopkins girls tennis team went 0-3 in its last three matchups, losing by 4-3 scores to Orono and Chanhassen in a round-robin showcase on Saturday and 5-2 to Eden Prairie on Tuesday. Individual statistics were not made available.

Breck Boys Soccer

A 1-0 win at Tri-Metro Conference rival Brooklyn Center improved the Breck boys soccer team to 5-5-1 on the season. 

Goalkeeper Jake Duxbury notched his fifth shutout of the year in the victory, while Andrew Headrick continues to lead the Mustangs with nine goals and seven assists this fall.

Breck Girls Soccer

The Breck girls soccer team lost 5-0 to Rochester Lourdes last Saturday to fall to 4-5 on the autumn. Individual statistics were not made available.

Breck Volleyball

The Breck volleyball team fell to 2-6 in a 3-0 loss at Visitation on Tuesday. Individual statistics were not made available.

Breck Girls Tennis

The Breck girls tennis team improved to 6-6 with a 4-3 defeat of Minnehaha Academy on Tuesday.

Armstrong Boys Soccer

The Robbinsdale Armstrong boys soccer team upped its record to 3-4-3 on the year with a 3-1 win at Northwest Suburban Conference rival Andover on Tuesday. Individual statistics were not made available.

Armstrong Girls Soccer

Andover shutout visiting Armstrong, 1-0, in a conference girls soccer matchup on Tuesday. Individual statistics were not made available.

Armstrong Volleyball

The Armstrong volleyball team topped Osseo, 3-2, on Tuesday to improve to 6-7 on the season.

Indigo Thompson leads the Falcons with 267 assists, as does Kelsey Sather with 143 assists while Olivia Keogh tops the team with 78 kills and 45 blocks.

Cooper Boys Soccer

Losses of 4-1 at Duluth Denfeld on Saturday and 3-2 at Irondale on Tuesday dropped the Robbinsdale Cooper boys soccer team to 0-9 on the year.

Heading into Tuesday, Bashiru Kormah led the Hawks with three goals this autumn.

Cooper Volleyball

The Cooper volleyball team defeated Columbia Heights 3-0 on Tuesday to impove to 2-8 this autumn. Individual statistics were not made available.
