“Systems of Mass Destruction,” a student-created film about a recent civil rights-focused tour, will premiere at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 28, at Armstrong High School.
The film is the result of collaborative efforts between students who spent their spring break on the Civil Rights Research Tour, which immersed a group of African-American student leaders with an intensive opportunity to explore the African-American experience in the United States by visiting historic sites from the civil rights movement. The premiere event is free and the public is welcome to attend.
The event will also include a student presentation and documentaries by both the West Metro Education Program and Robbinsdale Area Schools. There will also be an opportunity for discussion and Q&A.

“We feel that it is important, now more than ever, to provide students a platform to lift the veil of ignorance,” said Marcellus Davis, program director for achievement and integration with Robbinsdale Area Schools. “We hope that this movie is the impetus for a more racially inclusive curriculum. We hope that in all subjects the curriculum will be representative of the racially changing demographics that have made America what it is today, so all students can learn about all the Americans that have contributed to the development of this society.”
“Systems of Mass Destruction” is around 15 minutes long. It was edited by the students, and will eventually be available on YouTube. Davis said the film is part of a multimedia campaign to share the experience of the Civil Rights Research Tour.
