Students at Robbinsdale Middle School tackle history head on and it pays off. This year, nine projects are advancing to the state History Day competition to be held at the University of Minnesota on April 29th.

“The students did a tremendous job, and represent themselves, their families, Robbinsdale Middle School and our communities in a very positive light,” stated Josh Mann, social studies teacher at Robbinsdale Middle School.

Students work individual or in teams on original papers, websites, exhibits, performances and documentaries, exploring a historical topic which is related to an annual theme. The 2012 theme is “Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History.”

The students who are advancing are: in the Group Performance Category: Amelia Heusinkveld and Cara Meyer, and Jacklyn Gisvold, Krissy Van Laarhoven and Carly Frondell; in the Individual Performance Category: Maya Berg; in the Individual Documentary Category: Merryn Noble; in the Individual Exhibit Category: Emma Shine, Ed Necas, Jael Kerandi, and Jared Nelson; and in the Group Exhibit: Abbey and Allison Merkl. History Day is a highly regarded national academic program for elementary and secondary students. Every year, nearly half a million students participate in the contest, which help students develop skills that are critical for future success, such as critical thinking skills, reading, writing and research skills, and oral and written communication. More than 1,000 seventh and eighth grade students, creating more than 450 projects, competed in the regional History Day competition at Robbinsdale Middle School on February 9, 2012.
