Video: Stay Safe in Golden Valley Parks
Before you head out to your local park, make sure you run through a few safety checks.
With this week's burst of warm and sunny weather, many people took to Golden Valley's parks. But it also brought some calls to local police - especially from the bike paths like those at
"Every year in early spring we have people that are involved in accidents with their bicycles or rollerblades and that's because they didn't do safety checks before you get on your bike," says Sgt. Fred McCormick, with the Minneapolis Park Police. "Inevitably we'll get a few calls from the Grand Rounds bike path from people who have fallen or are stranded with a broken bike."
Andy Ulseth, manager at , says now is a perfect time to bring your bike to him. With temps in the 40s and 50s and snow this weekend, you can give up your bike for a few days and about $40 and get it back tuned up and ready to go.

"It keeps you safe, but it also helps keep your bike in good condition down the road," he says. "It's like getting an oil change for your car."
If you're driving to any of the parks in Golden Valley, you've probably heard the common sense tip to avoid keeping valuables in your car while you're playing in the park. But police say you might be surprised by how many people ignore this advice.

"These criminals work in pairs," McCormick says. "One's got a cell phone, looking out for the police while somebody else is nearby watching every move you make. As soon as you're out of sight, they will bust your window and take your valuables."
In other words, putting your purse under the front seat doesn't count as protecting your things.
With this latest round of winter-like weather upon us, why not take the opportunity to prepare for when it warms up again?
Bring your bike or blades in for a tune-up. Clean out your car and make sure anything valuable is taken out or left in the trunk. And make a plan with your family about how you'll stay safe the next time you head out to one of Golden Valley's many parks.
