Weekend Sports Roundup: Breck Claims Share of Tri-Metro Title

Mustangs blow out Blake as regular season comes to an end for local boys hockey teams; Hopkins, Cooper, Armstrong and Breck all learn of sectional seeds Sunday.

Breck blew out Blake to claim a share of the Tri-Metro Conference championship as the boys hockey regular season came to a close on Saturday for the Mustangs, Hopkins, Cooper and Armstrong. All four squads learned of their sectional seedings Sunday.

Breck Boys Hockey: Mustangs 5, Blake 1.

A 5-1 defeat of Blake on Saturday pulled Breck even with the Bears atop the Tri-Metro as the squads split the conference title with identical 13-1 circuit records.

Blake netted the first goal at the Anderson Ice Arena, but Breck powered back for the next five as Keegan Iverson, Grant Opperman, Derek Wiitala, Max Oppenhiemer and Austin Rudick each recorded one score apiece with Jack Kennery making 27 saves for the Mustangs.

After amassing a 17-8 regular-season record, Breck claimed a No. 2 seed for the Section 2A playoffs and will play either No. 7 Mound-Westonka or No. 10 Waconia on Friday night.

Cooper Boys Hockey: Hawks 4, St. Louis Park 2.

The Robbinsdale Cooper boys hockey team defeated St. Louis Park, 4-2, to finish the regular season with a 14-11 overall record.

Tim Roberg recorded the hat trick for the Hawks, with Tom Monteiro chipping in the other goal; Trent Kallas made nine saves in the Cooper net.

The victory kept the Hawks in fifth-place in the final North Suburban Conference standings with a 5-8 circuit mark.

Cooper was given the No. 7 seed for the Section 6AA playoffs as the Hawks will next take on No. 2 Wayzata at 7 p.m., Feb. 24 at the Plymouth Ice Center.

Armstrong Boys Hockey: Champlin Park 4, Falcons 2.

The Robbinsdale Armstrong boys hockey team dropped its regular season finale 4-2 to visiting Champlin Park to head into the playoffs with a 12-12-1 overall record and an 8-11-1 mark in the Northwest Suburban Conference, good for seventh in the circuit.

Nilan Anderson and Nick Malmgren scored for the Falcons in the loss as Michael Greenberg made 24 saves.

Armstrong took a No. 6 seed for the Section 6AA tournament and will play at No. 3 Benilde-St. Margaret's in the opener on Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. in the St. Louis Park Rec Center.

Hopkins Boys Hockey: Wayzata 9, Royals 3.

A 9-3 loss to Wayzata brought the regular season to an end for the Hopkins boys hockey team.

Connor Thie, Jalen Wahl and Jimmy Kortum scored for the Royals, with Sam Dalton and Stone Selseth splitting time in net, making 19 and 12 saves, respectively.

Hopkins, 11-14 overall and 0-8 in the Lake Conference to end its pre-playoff schedule, opens the Section 6AA playoffs with a No. 5 seed and will take on neighboring rival Minnetonka, seeded fourth, at 7 p.m. Feb. 24 at Pagel Ice Arena.
