College Possible Students at Ubah Medical Academy Spring Into Service

Students, staff and volunteers turn spring cleaning into community service

St. Paul, Minn. – As the unusually long winter carried through to May, College Possible students welcomed the new season by turning spring cleaning into community service. Whether it meant picking up trash on school grounds, planting shrubbery in the community park or cleaning up cluttered classrooms to show appreciation for hardworking teachers, College Possible students turned a “cold shoulder” to the winter months and gave back to their communities with warm hearts.

Over the past week, students from all 19 College Possible Twin Cities partner high schools engaged in community service projects to beautify their schools, neighborhoods and parks. It was their way of giving back in recognition of generous community support that makes their participation in this college access and success program possible. Each College Possible student receives a total of 320 hours of afterschool curriculum to prepare for and earn admission to college during their junior and senior years of high school and continued support through college graduation.

This year Ubah Medical Academy’s theme was “Carwash for College,” where all of the donations are to be gifted to the newly developed Ubah Senior Scholarship Fund.

College Possible makes community service a key component for students participating in the organization’s free after school college prep program. By encouraging students to develop an ethic of service, College Possible helps them see their own potential for making a difference in their communities. Each student completes multiple hours of community service during the high school program. As service is the basis of College Possible, students are often inspired by their coach’s service and are happy to pay-it-forward to their communities.

“Our students see how dedicating an afternoon to service can have a ripple effect in their community,” said College Possible Twin Cities Executive Director Sara Dziuk. “We use these opportunities to honor our community supporters. And as our students feel the rewards of their efforts, we hope their actions inspire others to serve as well.”
