Two STEP-UP Teens Lead Mentoring Peace Through Art in a Mosaic Project
Rheanna and Kong, two STEP-UP teens, work together to plan and create a mosaic at Cafe SouthSide off of Chicago.
Afternoons were long and hot at Cafe SouthSide with Mentoring Peace
Through Art working diligently on yet another mural. This time,
however, new materials were available, and the team planned to make a
mosaic.
Throughout the summer, this non-profit organization has worked at
various locations, painting murals to cover graffiti on private
property. At 3405 Chicago Ave S, STEP-UP youth spent their days
breaking tiles and mixing mortar.
"We've got this mosaic that Kong designed," team leader Grace Washko
said. Kong, a young Hmong teen, has shown strong work-ethic and
artistic skills through his months with Mentoring Peace Through Art.
Rheanna, another STEP-UP youth, has also grown incredibly in her leadership abilities and artistic talent. Together, the two led the mosaic project, bringing everyone to a finished product that was beautiful and inspiring.
