Gone Fishing

Local children enjoy a day on Lake Minnetonka with Hopkins police.

Twenty children headed to Lake Minnetonka on Thursday for some fishing with members of the Hopkins Police Department, according to a police department news release.

The day out was part of a “Cops and Kids Fishing Event” for children from under-privileged homes or disadvantaged situations.

A limousine picked the children up Thursday morning and took them to the lake, where they fished for three hours from two pontoon boats donated by a rental company. The children caught and released many fish, with one child catching 35 fish.

The group then returned to the police station for pizza, and the children received a fishing rod, reel and a tackle box.

The event aims to build positive bonds between officers and the children. A Department of Natural Resources grant and donations from local businesses helped to pay for the event.
