Have You Heard of the Hopkins Summer Food Truck?

The truck provides free lunches to kids during the summer.

Food trucks are all the rage right now—and the Hopkins Public Schools food truck is no exception. The truck got some attention recently when KARE 11 spotlighted it in a June 17 news story.

With help from a $25,000 grant from Second Harvest Heartland, the district purchased a food truck that allows the Summer Food Program to take hot lunches to different neighborhoods.

The Summer Food Program was previously at facilities tied to three schools whose areas include large numbers of students receiving free and reduced lunch, a common measure of poverty. But not all the students who could benefit the program live near those schools. The food truck takes hot lunches to other “pockets of poverty” that don’t fall in the areas already served.
