The Hopkins Boys' Varsity Soccer team took to the road Thursday to face Chaska in their 2013 season opener. The boys won 5-3 led by Junior Lewis Levesque with two regulation goals and the go-ahead goal in overtime.
Other contributions came from Senior Pablo Alguindigue with a goal and two assists, and Sophomore Andrew Shirley with an overtime goal to cinch the game.Chaska came out fast with a quick goal but once Hopkins settled down they proceeded to answer the Chaska goal with three first half goals of their own. Coach Justin Hegre was pleased with the two goal lead a halftime but lectured his team to keep up the pressure and add to the score. His words fell on deaf ears as Chaska turned momentum in their favor and scored two second half goals sending the game into overtime.
Hopkins regained momentum and scored two goals in overtime to secure their first win of the season. After the game Coach Hegre said "If this is an indication of scoring capability of this team we are in for an exciting season."
The boys face St. Louis Park in their home opener Saturday August 14 at 11:00 at the Hopkins High School Stadium. "This will be a grudge match," said coach Hegre, "they spanked us last year in non-conference play so the boys are looking for revenge."
