Hopkins competed with 40 teams statewide for the chance to advance to the national competition. The Hopkins teams qualified for State by placing first and fourth in regional competitions.
Students competed in five quizzes on different environmental topics including aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife, and a special topic that changes on an annual basis -- this year, the topic was low impact design and nonpoint source pollution. In addition to taking knowledge and skill- based quizzes, each team had to give a 10-minute presentation on a scenario related to building an environmentally friendly sports stadium using low impact design techniques. Students earn points for each test, and the team with the highest cumulative score wins.
