Letter to the Editor: Candidate Opposes Council Stand on Voter ID

Editor’s Note: , a candidate to represent Senate District 46 in the state Senate, submitted the following letter to the editor in response to urging residents to vote against the voter ID amendment.

The St. Louis Park City Council recently passed a resolution to urge the citizens in St Louis Park to vote against the voter ID amendment. The state House and Senate majority passed the voter I.D. amendment that puts it on the ballot this November. The polling shows that close to 70% of the citizens in Minnesota support the amendment. The St. Louis Park Council voted to publicly oppose the voter I.D. amendment that the majority of St. Louis Park residents support.

I am concerned with the Council’s decision, in using their position of power to try to persuade the public in this matter. The voter ID amendment would help voting integrity and furnish free I.D.to citizens who need one. There are about 20 million illegal immigrants in the United States, and having an ID to vote is a reasonable requirement.  We as citizens are required to show IDs for many things and this should be one of them.

I feel our senior citizens realize how important each vote is and will vote to protect the integrity of the voting process. The women in this country fought long and hard to have the right to vote and in this day and age, they would fight just as hard to protect the integrity in the voting process. I am Roger Champagne, a candidate for Senate District 46 in St. Louis Park. I urge the voters to reject this type of activism by the St Louis Park City Council and vote to protect voter integrity.
