Police: Man Hit Boy With Pipe For Defending His Mother

A Hopkins man is accused of hitting a 15-year-old boy with a metal pipe Sunday after the boy jumped on top of the man to stop him from pushing his mother.

The woman told police at 11:31 p.m. that her husband, 33-year-old Mahesh Ganpat, got angry because lights were on in the home and the couple’s 4-year-old son was going to bed late, Police Sgt. Michael Glassberg wrote in the charging documents.

She went into the bedroom to speak with Ganpat, but he allegedly started pushing her, according to the documents. Seeing this, the 15-year-old jumped on top of Ganpat to try to stop him.

The boy, the woman and the 4-year-old then fled the home. As they were leaving, Ganpat hit the 15-year-old in the arm with a metal pipe, the boy told police. Officers could see a mark from the pipe and noted that the 15-year-old and his mother had left the home so quickly they were not able to grab their shoes.

Ganpat admitted hitting the boy with a pipe.

He’s been charged with second-degree assault—a felony that carries a sentence of between one year and one day in prison and seven years in prison, plus the possibility of a $4,200 to $14,000 fine.

He’s also been charged with misdemeanor fifth-degree assault in connection with the alleged pushing of his wife. That carries a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Ganpat is being held in jail on $20,000 bond.
