Sports Roundup: Hopkins Girls Win, Boys Lose In Section Soccer Openers

Royals advance to play Minnetonka on Saturday, boys see season come to a close.

The Hopkins boys and girls soccer teams came up on opposite ends of the decision in their postseason openers against Minneapolis Southwest, while the Royals volleyball team earned its first Lake Conference victory of the year in its second-to-last dual match of the regular season.

Girls Soccer

A 4-0 defeat of sixth-seeded Minneapolis Southwest in its playoff opener on Thursday advanced the third-seeded Hopkins girls soccer team into the Section 6AA semifinals.

Individual statistics were not made available. The Royals play at No. 2 seed Minnetonka on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Boys Soccer

A 3-0 loss at defending section champion tenth-ranked and third-seeded Minneapolis Southwest in the Section 6AA Tournament opener on Thursday ended the sixth-seeded Hopkins boys soccer season with a 4-10-3 record. Individual statistics were not made available.

Cross-Country Running

The Hopkins girls and boys cross-country teams both finished fourth at the Lake Conference Championship Meet at Gale Woods Farm on Thursday.

John Kleckner led the Royals boys with a fourth-place individual time of 16 minutes, 15.1 seconds, with Sam Jacobwith (16:20) and Joe Klecker (16:25) taking sixth and eighth, respectively.

A trio of Kleckers paced the Hopkins girls as Mary (15:16.3) took fourth, Elizabeth (15:49.9) placed 15th and Sarah (15:50.8) came in 16th.

Volleyball

A 3-2 win at Edina on Thursday gave the Hopkins volleyball team its first conference victory of the season and improved the Royals to 10-13 overall and 1-6 in the Lake.

Hopkins competes in the Eastview Tournament this weekend, then closes out the regular season at home versus Eden Prairie on Tuesday.
