IGH Pipers Honor Fallen Firefighters, Soldiers

Two IGH men are looking at a way to further honor fallen firefighters and soldiers.

Lynn Ista and Richard Cady, both of Inver Grove Heights, testified [Friday] in support of legislation designating the Minnesota State Fire Service Memorial pipe band as the state's official fire service memorial pipe band.

I was a bit leery about their proposal when they first told me about it a year ago.  Then I learned more.  The Minnesota State Fire Service Memorial pipe band plays for free at funerals for fallen firefighters, soldiers and veterans as well as at Beyond the Yellow Ribbon and National Guard events.  They have been doing this for several years.

The Minnesota State Fire Service Memorial pipe band isn't seeking the "official" designation out of vanity or arrogance or a desire to make money, but simply to make their performaces even more meaningful to the grieving families and worthy organizations they serve.

Thank you to Mr. Ista and Mr. Cady and the other members of the MSFSMPB for your service, particularly to military and firefighter families who have lost a loved one.  I am proud to serve as the chief author of your bill, which passed overwhelmingly and with bipartisan support out of the House Government Operations Committee.
