Fencing and Cake Decorating Among November Community Education Classes

Ever wanted to learn how to make the perfect falafel? You have the chance this November, courtesy of TriDistrict Community Education. Computer Explorers: Digital Magician Photo Editing
When/Where: 3:15 to 4:45 p.m. on Nov. 11 and 18 at Hilltop Elementary School
Ages: Kindergarten through third grade.
About: Students become digital magicians and artists using digital painting, photo editing and animation software. We’ll look at famous artwork for inspiration, and create original digital images using computer tools. We will edit photographs in fun and whimsical ways to produce a pop-art, impressionist, and cubist style images. The last session we will put all the creations together in an interactive slide show. This project sparks imagination and stimulates creativity! Stretch the limits of your students' imagination.
Cost: $35
Fondant Cake Decorating
When/Where: 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 16 at the South St. Paul High School.
Ages: Adult
About: Fondant: It’s what all of the decorators on the fancy cake shows use to cover and decorate their cakes. Learn the basics of covering a cake with fondant and some easy fondant decorating techniques. Go home with a beautiful fondant cake covered with fall leaves. Students need to bring: two 8” or 9” round cakes that are baked and removed from the pan; 2-3 cups buttercream icing; ruler; and a cake carrier to bring the cake home.
Cost: $29 plus a $12 materials fee.

Mediterranean Favorites: Falafel with Garlic Sauce
When/Where: 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 7 at Henry Sibley High School
Ages: Adult
About: Falafel is ground chick peas formed into a ball and deep fried to delicious perfection. Top it will garlic sauce and you have a taste of the Mediterranean.
Cost: $29 plus a $12 materials fee.
Beginning Portraiture: The Grid Method
When/Where: 7 p.m. to 9 p.m on Nov. 15, 22, 29 at the Inver Grove Heights Middle School.
Ages: Adult
About: This class is an introduction to the art of creating facial portraits using the grid method. Follow the history of the grid. Discover which artists, past and present, used the grid. Create a simple grid drawing from photos. Then construct an 8x10 graphite portrait drawing from one of your own photos. Prerequisite: Completion of "What's in a Face?" course.
Cost: $66 plus a $25 materials fee.

Musketeer Fencing
When/Where: 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on at Kaposia Elementary School Gym.
Ages: Grades 1-6
About: Children will learn real fencing skills while having fun in our class! Our children's classes are performed in a non-threatening environment, with an emphasis on skill building, concentration, self-discipline and fun! We provide everything needed to fence (mask, jacket, glove and weapon). Please call 651-306-3633 to register. Dress comfortably (long sweat pants and running shoes).
