Game of the Week: Simley Cross Country Top Runners Compete in State Championships

Simley runners Margie Freed and Max Wellens will compete in the Class AA state cross country state championship Saturday.

10 a.m. (Girl’s) and 11 (Boy’s) on Saturday at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

ON THE LINE
The Spartans have two individual runners in the Minnesota State High School League Championship this Saturday. Both runners qualified for the state tournament after finishing in the top ten at the Section 3AA Championships. The team is holding their team banquet Tuesday.

RUNNERS TO WATCH

Margie Freed—Simley
The eighth-grader finished seventh in the recent Section 3AA Championships with a time of 14:52. Freed was sixth in the Mayo Invitational with a time of 15:27.76 (4K) and seventh in the Roy Griak Invitational (19:47 5K).

Max Wellens—Simley
The senior was eighth in the Section 3AA Championships with a time of 16:07, an improvement on a 14th place finish last year. Wellens won the Classic Suburban Conference championship two weeks ago with a time of 16:41.8, 17.7 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. He finished third last season. Wellens won the Simley Invitational (3,200 meters) with a time of 10.29 three weeks ago and was third in the Classic Suburban Conference Preview in September. He set a personal record at the Mayo Invite with a time of 16:20.40, where he finished fifth. Wellens is familiar with the course after he ran a 16:52.00 in the 5,000-meter at Roy Griak Invitational, placing sixth.
