ISD 199 Publishes Information & Resources For Distance Learning Extension

"With the April 23 decision from Governor Walz to continue Distance Learning through the end of the school year, the next few weeks of school will be different than ever before. The following information is provided to address some questions from families.

Activities and Performances Canceled

The governor’s decision to close school buildings for the remainder of this academic year also brings about the cancellation of all cocurricular activities, contests, and performances that were scheduled through the end of this school year.

Simley High School Graduation

High school graduation options are being discussed, but a decision has not been finalized at this time. Simley High School will communicate its decision to 12th-grade families once a decision is made.

Special Programs and Recognition Events

Special programs and recognition events that typically take place at the end of each school year will be canceled unless your school communicates otherwise. Schools will share more information about these events when decisions are made.

Summer School

The school district is waiting for guidance from the governor to make decisions about summer school and Summer Academy.

Distance Learning

Given the situation, our students, staff, and families have worked collaboratively in an unprecedented manner during the past few weeks. Even with these extraordinary efforts, we know it is not perfect. We will continue to add support for student learning needs, accommodations, well-being, and more. To give us a better idea of where we should prioritize support, we will be asking families to complete a survey, which we will send out at the beginning of next week.

No Distance Learning May 1 and 4

The governor’s executive order to close school buildings for the rest of the year also mandates that Friday, May 1, and Monday, May 4, be days for teacher professional development to assist with Distance Learning planning and preparation. There will be no Distance Learning for students on these two days.

Meals

Any child between the ages of 2-18 can pick up a box of multiple breakfast and lunch meals twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays. Each pickup will provide enough food so kids have a breakfast and a lunch each day until the next pickup.

Meals and boxes of food from the Sheridan Story will be available for pickup from 11 AM - 1 PM in the front entrance of ISD 199 buildings. An ISD 199 school bus will also be at locations around the district to distribute meals for families who do not live near a school. Click here for locations and approximate times.

The Neighbors, Inc. Food Shelf is also available to any community member who needs food. Call 651-455-5000 between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM, Monday – Friday. If you are unable to get through when you call, keep trying. Under certain circumstances, Neighbors, Inc. may also be able to deliver food.

We understand that this situation has put new strain on many families mentally and financially. If you have not done so already, please click here to fill out an Educational Benefits Application. While the application can qualify families for free and reduced meals, it can also be used for discounts on a number of services, including phone, Internet, and energy service discounts.

Childcare for Healthcare & Emergency Workers

We will continue to provide free childcare for district-enrolled students (ages 4-12) of Tier 1 healthcare and emergency workers through the end of the school year, June 4. Care will be provided on May 1 and May 4, which have been mandated as non-school days in the governor’s latest order. As a reminder, there will be no childcare on Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day.

We have updated our childcare registration information. To register your child for continued childcare, click here. Please ONLY REGISTER FOR THE DAYS YOUR CHILD NEEDS CARE. If you are unsure of your needs at this time, please register and then call or text us if your child will not be attending.

Picking Up and Returning Items

Many students still have things at school that will need to be picked up before the end of the school year. Students also have devices and other items that will need to be returned. Schools will decide when and how this will happen and will communicate that to families as soon as possible.
