SPORTS ROUNDUP: Simley Wrestlers Open Season With Five Victories

The Spartans girls hockey team improves its record to 4-3-1.

Here is a look at recent action by Simley varsity teams:

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Simley dropped to 1-1 on the season after its 56-50 loss to Mounds View on Saturday.

The Spartans led at halftime, 27-23, before being outscored by 10 points in the second half.

Kylie Brown scored a team-high 16 points  and pulled down a game-high 18 rebounds for Simley. Also scoring in double figures were Abby Kain, with 13, and Maya DeLao, with 12 points.

Simley hosts Benilde-St. Margaret’s on Tuesday.

GYMNASTICS
Simley finished fifth out of nine teams competing in the Simley Invitational on Sturday.

Top finishers for the Spartans were Emily Dittel, eighth on floor; Sarah Birkelo, fifth on beam, ninth on floor and eighth on vault and in the all-around; and Sarah Kruse, 10th on vault and ninth on vault and beam.

Simley will host North St. Paul on Thursday.

BOYS HOCKEY
Simley fell to 0-2 on the season with its 3-1 loss to Spring Lake Park on Saturday.

Aaron Leafgren scored the Spartans’ first goal of the season in the third quarter to cut his team’s deficit to two goals.

Goalie Mike Sarantos stopped 25 of 28 shots for the Spartans.

Simley will host St. Paul Highland Park on Thursday.

GIRLS HOCKEY
Simley scored three first-period goals as it defeated Fergus Falls, 4-2, on Saturday.

The Spartans (4-3-1) got a pair of goals from Lexi Muller, the first unassited and the second on an assist from Laken Muller; and single goals from Laken Muller, with an assist from Nikki Nelson; and Ann Hansen, with an assist by Nicki Sobaski.

Simley wlll visit Bloomington Kennedy on Thursday.

WRESTLING
Simley opened the season with an impressive three days of work.

On Thursday, the Spartans defeated Owatonna, 38-17. Then on Saturday, they captured four matches at the Rochester Duals, defeating Rochester John Marshall, Stewartville, Pine Island and Rochester Mayo.

Simley will visit St. Michael-Albertville on Friday and take part in the Prior Lake Duals on Saturday.
