Results of Lake Minnetonka Nautical Archaeology Project Now Available

“We have an incredible array of different kinds of boats that sunk to the bottom of Lake Minnetonka, and that kind of history is not preserved anywhere.”

Maritime Heritage Minnesota has completed the Lake Minnetonka Nautical Archaeology 1 Project. This project was funded by a Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grant, made possible by the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund (part of the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment) through the vote of Minnesotans on November 4, 2008 and administered by the Minnesota Historical Society.

Maritime Heritage Minnesota and a group of dedicated and ethical volunteer divers confirmed the existence of 10 more wrecks in Lake Minnetonka, four of which are now recognized nautical archaeological sites by the State of Minnesota. The other six wrecks will be sites in the future and remain under the protection of the DNR.
