Ely-Winton Historical Society and the Slovenian Union of America Present “A Salute to Slovenian America”

Celebrate your cultural roots and find out what it
means to be Slovenian in America.
Join Dr. Mirjam Hladnik, senior research fellow at the Institute for Slovenian Emigration Studies at the Scientific Research Center of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and Joseph Valencic, Cleveland’s most famous Scribe, Historian, and Filmmaker as they present three films on Slovenes in America. After each film they will discuss behind-the-scene
stories about the making of the films and reveal the lessons they learned about being Slovenian in a multicultural society. Discover how Slovenians in America
maintain their identity although generations removed from their roots in Slovenia.

On Friday, July 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
anyone can stop by the Vermilion Community College Theatre, 1900 East Camp Street, Ely for this FREE cultural event. Topics will highlight social, economic and
cultural sustainability of Slovenian Americans over the decades. The Ely-Winton Historical Society and Slovenian
Union of America have partnered in hosting this 1^st annual cultural event.

For your convenience, the Ely-Winton Historical Society will be open during event hours so be sure to stop in.

Following the film festival, join Dr. Hladnik and Mr. Valencic at the Creek Ridge Lodge Slovenska Miza – for a Slovenian Table buffet style dinner. Reservations are required and the cost is $13.95 per
person. After dinner, polka to Slovenian Sounds featuring
the incredible Frank Udovich, Rudy Jandrey, John Stark and the Barich Brothers.

1:00 p.m.: Slovenians in American
Music. From jazz and rock to opera and polkas, Slovenians have contributed to the sounds of America. (Joseph Valencic)

2:00 p.m.: “Polka! The Movie.” A film
that celebrates why Americans love Slovenian polka music and sausages. Featuring Chisholm’s own Fr. Frank Perkovich and his Polka Mass. (Written and
narrated by Joseph Valencic)

4:00 p.m.: The Legacy of Slovenian
Women Migrants in the U.S. How Slovenian women enriched their communities, their families and themselves across the country.  (Dr. Mirjam Milharcic Hladnik)

4:30 p.m.: “100% Slovenian: The Stories
of Slovenian Women in America.” Four generations of women share colorful insights into the traditions and memories that keep them Slovenian. (Written
