A total of 42 MWHS students were inducted into the National Honor Society at a special ceremony April 21. Another 32 seniors, who were inducted into the program last year, were also on hand for special recognition.

The inductees recited the New Member Pledge, which encourages high standards of scholarship, leadership, service and character. The officers of the NHS Executive Board spoke to each of those standards.

“Scholarship is more than maintaining a 3.0 GPA,” said Treasurer Claire Erickson. “It refers to ambition in the classroom.”

Vice President Mackenzie Strehle said, “Leadership requires the capacity to lead others by your actions.”

“We are proud to service our community,” said President Hannah Berg. Some of this year’s service projects included Feed My Starving Children, raking leaves for seniors and manning the warming house for children at Shirley Hills Primary School.

“How you react to failures builds your moral and ethical character,” said Secretary Grant Piepkorn. “We are role models for our school.”

Advisors Kristyn Kallas and Crystal Gravelle introduced each of the new members, who received a certificate from Assistant Principal Marty Fischer. The senior members of the NHS were recognized and thanked for their leadership and service.

“This year's group has been wonderful to work with, and has gone above our expectations,” said Advisor Matt Lenz. “Our proudest time, as advisors, was the leadership and work ethic that our kids showed during the Feed My Starving Children Mobile Pack. So many kids volunteered more hours than were required to be a part of such a great cause. We are so proud of our kids and couldn't think of a better group of kids to represent the MWHS chapter of the National Honor Society.”
