Dominating Doubles Play Lands Wayzata Girls' Tennis Another Win
The Trojans won every set during doubles play on their way to beating Lakeville South, 5-2.
It wasn’t a pretty start for the Wayzata doubles teams at Lakeville South on Monday. The first team, in particular, fell behind early, but the girls quickly settled down and started fixing early mistakes.
“Our number one doubles team was down, and they could have kept doing what they were doing and gone down quickly,” Wayzata head coach Marci Weiner said. “But then they turned it around and did a better job at the net.”
All of the doubles teams for Wayzata did a great job of returning the ball, serving and eventually dominated the net. Overall, the team used a balanced attack to defeat the Cougars, and they are going to rely on their team balance throughout the season, according to Weiner.

“We have a lot of flexibility in our lineup,” Weiner said. “I’m going to be able to mix it up this season.”
The Trojans enter the season ranked No. 5 in the state and are going to have a chance to compete with some of the best teams in the state right within their conference.

Throughout the season the team also looks forward to seeing freshman Kelly Yang improve, the team’s No. 1 singles player. She lost to 8th ranked Shelby Henderson in the match against Lakeville South, but shows some promise in being a force to be reckoned with in coming years.
The win against the Lakeville South Cougars keeps Wayzata at a perfect 4-0 on the season.
Wayzata’s next matches are against Providence Academy at home on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 4 p.m. and at home against Shakopee on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 4 p.m.
