Orono City Council Set to Meet With Hennepin County Officials to Discuss Pedestrian Plan

The Navarre Community Initiative co-hosted a recent local meeting to gather citizen input on Hennepin County's first ever Pedestrian Plan—a draft of which is due for review in the coming weeks.

Advocating for a safe and pedestrian-friendly Navarre, the Navarre Community Initiative has presented a petition with 200 signatures to the Orono City Council and Planning Commission asking that pedestrian, bike and auto safety be a No. 1 priority.

The Navarre Community Initiative co-hosted a recent local meeting to gather citizen input on Hennepin County's first ever Pedestrian Plan—a draft of which is due for review in the coming weeks. Orono Mayor Lili McMillan joined members of the Navarre Community Initiative for an on-the-ground look at Navarre's issues.

The Navarre Community Initiative says safety issues exist on Hennepin County property, County Roads 15 and 19, and the City of Orono has been granted a meeting with Hennepin County to address Navarre's safety issues.

Discussion will include the stretch of County Road 15 from the pedestrian cross walk to the bus shelter; pedestrian crossing at County Roads 15 and 19; pedestrian crossing at Casco Point Road; difficult turn situations on County Road 15 near Lund's; and the lack of a safe and direct bike and pedestrian connection from the Dakota Rail Train to the Navarre Business District.

The first ever Hennepin County Pedestrian Plan Needs Your Input.

Hennepin County has engaged the Community Design Group to hold community Interactive workshops on walking in Hennepin County. The Navarre Community Initiative is co-hosting the Navarre workshop.

The plan seeks to make walking a safer, more convenient and more enjoyable transportation choice and create a vision for improving and enhancing the pedestrian environment on the county road system.
