Sports Roundup: Local Teams Begin Post-Labor Day Schedules

Local athletic teams dove into their post-Labor Day schedules on Tuesday as several squads from Wayzata, Mound Westonka and Orono returned to competition on the first day of school.

Wayzata Girls Tennis

The Wayzata girls tennis team improved to 6-0 on the season with a 4-3 defeat of Eden Prairie on Tuesday in the Lake Conference opener.

Lucia Solis and Caitlin Eichten won in singles competition, with Ali Heiring/Carol Coutinho and Haley Nichols/Hallie Koehn claiming victories in doubles matches to clinch the win.

Wayzata Volleyball

A four-game match loss (25-22, 23-25, 15-25, 22-25) at No. 1-ranked Bloomington Jefferson on Tuesday dropped the third-ranked Wayzata volleyball team to 2-1 on the year.

Toni Okuyemi leads the Trojans with 158 kills through three matches, with Julia Doyle leading the team in assists (405) and aces (23), with Lauren Houg's 146 digs pacing the squad.

Wayzata Girls Soccer

The No. 2-ranked Wayzata girls soccer team tied seventh-ranked Eden Prairie, 0-0, on the road in the Lake Conference opener on Tuesday.

Kylie Schwartz leads the team with three goals, with Summer Johnson following up with two goals on the season thus far. Goalkeepers Delane Swanson and Mara Dougherty have split time in net, making six saves in three games and four saves in two games, respectively.

Wayzata Boys Soccer

A 3-0 loss at Eden Prairie in the Lake Conference opener on Tuesday dropped the Wayzata boys soccer team to 1-3-1 on the season. Individual statistics were not made available.

Orono Girls Soccer

The Orono girls soccer team—ranked third in Class A—thumped Hutchinson by a 7-1 score on Tuesday night in Wright County Conference play to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Through five games, Sophie Babo leads the Spartans with 11 goals and seven assists, with teammates Nikki Smith logging four goals and two assists. Starting goalkeeper Abigail Personious has made 34 saves on 38 shots faced thus far.

Orono Boys Soccer

A 5-0 shutout win at Hutchinson got the Orono boys soccer team's season off to a rousing start as the Trojans improved to 2-2 this fall.

Willi Semsch leads Orono with five points on three goals and two assists, while Will Fraser and Ben Engler share the squad's goal scoring lead with three apiece thus far.

Orono vs. Mound Westonka Girls Tennis

Orono defeated Mound Westonka, 6-1, in Wright County girls tennis competition on Tuesday. Individual statistics were not made available.

Mound Westonka Boys Soccer

The Mound Westonka boys soccer team claimed its second-straight shutout win, 4-0 at Glencoe-Silver Lake, on Tuesday night in the Wright County opener. Individual statistics were not made available.
