The School Bus is Coming—“Anticipation” or “Apprehension”?

Back to school creates a lot of anticipation in our homes—both for students and parents.  Questions of “What will this new year bring?”, “What will my day be like?”, “Who will my friends be?”, “Will this be a fresh start for me, or more of the same?” etc., may be on the minds of our family members.

For a student with difficulties in math, there may be a feeling of apprehension when thinking about what is ahead of him/her after the enjoyment of a carefree summer.  Perhaps previous years’ experiences of having the first few weeks feel easy, and then fading into the introduction of new material reminds him/her that this place isn’t so comfortable after all, and this year may be just like the others.  Or perhaps, after years of frustration, it just really doesn’t feel like it’s worth trying any longer, because this year will be the same.

Unfortunately, this lack of confidence toward learning may spill into other subject areas, as well.  And, this year will be chalked into history as the same as all the others.

Well, we have a very special gift at My Math Teacher, LLC.  We have a history of working with many students who have experienced this very same situation.  And we have had the privilege of experiencing the transformation into a willingness to learn and try and SUCCEED at new math material—breaking the cycle of a disheartened feeling toward math, and developing a confident one.

How? Well, our very first strategy is to develop a “Playbook for a Winning Season”!  (Probably similar to what the Minnesota Vikings are doing right now!).  We analyze a student’s learning style and help them develop their very own, unique to them, set of skills that help them tap into their intrinsic resources to approach learning in a way that is successful for them.  No, it’s not magic, but for a student who has had a history of struggling in math, it certainly feels like it.
