Wayzata Girls Follow Boys, Win State Golf Title

The Trojans shot a 661 at the Class AAA state tournament; Sarah Burnham finished 5th overall

The Wayzata girls golf team avoided the obvious Tuesday night. Instead of thinking about their six-stroke lead in the Class AAA state meet, they simply thought about anything else to keep that fact off their minds.

“We talked zero about the number of strokes lead,” coach Mike Schumacher said. “We talked zero about what we had to shoot. We just said be composed, be steady, be confident, be patient, and it would take care of itself.”

The strategy worked. Wayzata took home the state championship Wednesday at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids, increasing its lead to seven strokes over second place Stillwater Area during the second round of the tournament. The Trojans won the title with a 661 overall score.

The win came hours after the Trojans’ boys team tied Rogers for the boys state golf title on the same course.

“Good day for Trojans golf across the board,” Schumacher said.

It was a good day for freshman Sarah Burnham, too.

Burnham led Wayzata by shooting a 155 at the tournament, earning fifth place overall out of 88 golfers.

She followed up her first round score of 80 with a 75 on Wednesday, staying composed and calm on the course despite the knowing a state title was on the line.

Burnham said the team knew it needed to play solid on Day 2, and the team came through.

“It’s just so exciting,” Burnham said. “We have tears of joy. It’s so amazing. It’s an honor to be playing for Wayzata.”

Schumacher said Burnham showed how talented she is on the course Wednesday.

“She’s an outstanding player,” he said. “She’s an anchor.”

Senior Taylor Fontaine finished tied for 23rd overall with a 167 at the tournament, and junior Liz Bauernfeind finished 25th with a 168. Senior Emily Erickson shot a 174 and took 35th place, while Becca Lewis shot a 175 and Taylor Darula finished with a 185.

Schumacher said the beauty of the Trojans’ squad is from top to bottom everyone buys into a team-first philosophy.

He said that’s why Wayzata took home the title.

“We preach golf as a team sport, and depth was huge for us,” Schumacher said. “We had six kids contribute and play a huge role for us.”
