Wayzata Tennis Narrowly Falls To Edina

The top-ranked Hornets pulled out a 5-2 victory, but needed a pair of three-set wins to do it.

Wayzata girls tennis coach Marci Weiner had a simple message for her team after Tuesday’s 5-2 loss to rival Edina.

“We’ll be back,” she said. “We’re not going away.”

Class AA’s fifth-ranked Trojans openly admit their first meeting with the 14-time defending state champion and top-ranked Hornets was circled on the schedule from Day 1, and the squad played with that tenacity Tuesday at the Edina Community Center.

And even though the squad came away with a loss, Weiner said the team has much to be optimistic about.

“I really believe that this is the best competition that Edina’s had all season,” she said.

Edina picked up big victories from No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles on the day. Senior Lucia Solis defeated Meghana Vasireddy 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, and Hallie Koehn and Haley Nichols quickly won at No. 2 doubles 7-5, 6-1.

Then came the heartbreakers.

At No. 1 doubles, Caitlin Eichen and Ali Heiring narrowly dropped a three-set match—falling 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. The pair held a 5-1 lead in the third set, but Edina’s Morgan Marinovich and Meghan Heiring pulled off the comeback.

Minutes earlier, Coutinho and Aneesha Ahluwalia lost a 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 decision to Hannah Hankinson and Mackenzie Marinovich.

Edina coach Steve Paulsen said the Lake Conference showdown was a valuable lesson for his squad heading into tournament play later this fall.

“Certainly not to take anything for granted,” Paulsen said. “Having a good quality match like this and being pushed, that will help us.”
