Wayzata Tennis Ousted At Sections

The Trojans fell 6-1 to Edina in the section championship

The Wayzata girls tennis team got its shot, but Edina was too much on Thursday as the Hornets won the Section 6AA title with a 6-1 win over the Trojans at Lifetime Fitness in Lakeville.

The Trojans, ranked No. 4 in the state, nearly pulled off an upset against Edina on Sept. 20 and hoped to finish the job on Thursday. But the 14-time defending state champion Hornets were too much, sweeping doubles and winning three of the four singles matches.

“It’s hard to watch them play well and be beaten,” Trojans coach Marci Weiner said. “But there is always somebody better than you out there.”

The Trojans reached the section championship thanks to a 7-0 win over Robbinsdale Armstrong in the section quarterfinals and a 5-2 win over Hopkins in the semifinals. But the Hornets showed their depth and their championship pedigree, and as a result they’ll face Mounds View in the state quarterfinals on Oct. 25 at the University of Minnesota.

Still, it wasn’t an easy win according to Edina coach Steve Paulsen.

“To get by them from our section—this is the closest match we’ve had with a region team for a while,” Paulsen said. “The girls knew it. The girls knew they had their hands full.”

The Trojans can now focus on the individual and doubles section tournaments, which begin on Monday in Lakeville. Unfortunately for Wayzata and its dream season, the team portion is now complete.

“We just had 12 unbelievably talented girls who had a great time playing,” Weiner said. “Mission accomplished. We had a great season and a lot of fun.”
