The United States is at a critical point in our economic recovery. The actions we take now will determine our future as a world leader or a country that falls behind. Immigration is one of the most important issues for Congress to focus on to protect our country’s interests for the future. The system is currently too chaotic and broken, fundamentally damaging our economy. It must be reformed in a way that promotes effective change.
The first step in reforming immigration should be securing the border. If we don’t stop the influx of illegal immigrants at the border, then any other reforms will be frivolous. Law enforcement currently does not have the resources they need to effectively prevent illegal immigration. Comprehensive reform could change this and finally give our law enforcement the tools they need.
Another component of comprehensive reform is establishing a fair pathway to citizenship. It would be most beneficial to establish a system where undocumented immigrants already living in the country gained citizenship. Increasing the number of H-1B visas would promote legal immigration and attract the brightest minds. Overall, Congress should pursue this/such a/a comprehensive action/path, as it will promote America’s economic growth.
