LAKEVILLE, MN — A Faribault man has been sentenced to more than 10 years in prison for fatally shooting his co-worker outside a Lakeville Amazon warehouse after an argument over a missing gun attachment, prosecutors said.
Mohamed A. Hared, 26, was sentenced Friday in Dakota County District Court for the shooting death of 22-year-old Ahmed Ibrahim Cariif, Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena announced.
Judge Richelle Wahi sentenced Hared to 128 months in prison. Hared will receive credit for 700 days already served.
In January, Hared pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree unintentional murder while committing a felony, prosecutors said.
Hared was originally charged in July 2024 with second-degree intentional murder in Cariif's death.
Lakeville police were called shortly after 4 a.m. June 29, 2024, to a parking lot outside a Lakeville business, according to the criminal complaint. Previous reports identified the business as the Amazon warehouse in Lakeville.
Hared, Cariif and a third man worked together and had carpooled to work that day, according to the complaint.
Hared, who had a permit to carry, brought a gun with a flashlight attachment and left it in the car while the three men went to work, prosecutors said.
During a break around 1 a.m., Hared went to the car and noticed the flashlight attachment was missing from the gun, according to the complaint.
Hared accused Cariif and the third man of stealing it, which both men denied, prosecutors said.
At about 4 a.m., the three men took another break and went to the car to look for the missing attachment, according to the complaint. Hared continued accusing the other two men, and Hared and Cariif got into two separate physical altercations.
During the second altercation, Hared pulled out his gun while Cariif tried to force it out of his hand, prosecutors said. Hared fired the gun, and the bullet struck a nearby unoccupied vehicle, according to the complaint.
The two men yelled, "Don't shoot," prosecutors said. Hared then fired again, hitting Cariif.
Cariif was pronounced dead at the scene with a gunshot wound to the chest. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office ruled his death a homicide.
"It's so senseless the victim was shot to death over such a trivial matter," Keena said after charges were filed in 2024. "Deadly gun violence has no place in our communities, neighborhoods or at our places of work. My condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Cariif."
Hared remains in custody at the Dakota County Jail while awaiting transfer to the Minnesota Department of Corrections.
