Lakeville Fire Department’s Annual Blood Drive is Saturday

The American Red Cross is seeking all blood types. The goal for the event is 58 pints. 

The Lakeville Fire Department is asking residents to take an active role in saving a life this weekend.

The department’s annual annual blood drive is planned for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at Fire Station 4, 9465 185th St. W.

The drive’s goal is 58 points.

Sue Gonsior, a program director with the American Red Cross in St. Paul, says in an email to Patch, “Currently, the blood supply is stable and all blood types are needed.”

Lakeville’s blood drive comes within weeks of a two high-profile incidents that put emphasis on the nation’s blood supply, Gonsior says.

“Tragedies like the Boston Marathon explosions and West, TX fertilizer plant explosion remind us it’s the blood and platelets already on the shelves that can help save lives during an emergency,” she says. “Thanks to the generosity of volunteer blood donors who gave in the days and weeks prior, the American Red Cross was prepared to respond with additional blood products for victims.”

According to the American Red Cross website, blood donors must:

  • Be healthy.
  • Be at least 17 years old, or 16 with parental consent
  • Weigh at least 110 lbs.
