Lakeville Man Starts 'Seeing It Slowly' on 2,300-Mile Walk to San Francisco
Nathan Mehlhoff will take four or five months to hoof it all the way to California.
Lakeville resident Nathan Mehlhoff began putting one foot in front of the other Monday, in the general direction of San Francisco, where he hopes to arrive by late fall. His route isn't set in stone, according to sunthisweek.com:
The Winona State junior estimates a four- or five-month journey, tentatively planning a route through South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah and Nevada to reach California.
Nathan said he may bunk at homes of strangers vetted through the website couchsurfing.org, or sleep under the stars in a sleeping bag he will carry.

At his blog, seeingitslowly.com, Mehlhoff logged his observations on heading west out of Lakeville on foot:
There wasn't much to see but the cars zooming down 185th. Most of the hike today was just walking out of my hometown that I know so well. But I was reassured in my purpose by simply looking around, up at the blue sky or toward the sun or passing ponds and farms and people. It's remarkable how enjoyable 3 mph can be. And I enjoyed it as cars flew past me going 60.
I bet the locals who fly down 185th have very rarely noticed this awesome little pond.
I found it amazing how someone stopped me on the trail in the park to take my picture because they saw me in the paper and how another person rolled down their window to wish me luck and say that they heard me on the radio. I also had quite a few people honk at me and wave. It's great to have so much interest and support in my journey.
