Lakeville South Opens Girls' Tennis Season With Sweep

Host Cougars romp past Robbinsdale Armstrong, Holy Angels and Hastings in season-opening tournament

Lakeville South opened the 2011 girls tennis season in style Wednesday, sweeping past visiting Robbinsdale Armstrong, Hastings and Holy Angels in a four-team tournament.

Lakeville South won the tournament with 19 points, followed by Hastings with 11. Armstrong and Holy angels both had 6.

Shelby Henderson, No. 1 singles player for the Cougars and all-time win leader for Lakeville South, had three straight set wins, defeating Armstrong-6-4, 6-4; Holy Angels 6-2, 6-4; and Hastings 6-2, 6-2.

No. 2 singles player Erika Williams also won three matches. She had a 6-4, 6-3 win over Armstrong, a 6-3, 6-2 win over Holy Angels and a 6-2, 6-2 win against Hastings.

Lakeville South sophomore Morgan Pieri also went 3-0 at No. 4 singles. She recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win over Robbinsdale Armstrong, a 6-3, 6-3 win over Holy Angels and a 6-4, 7-5 win against Hastings.

"Overall I was very pleased with not only the results, but the way they played and the fight they exhibited," said Lakeville South girls tennis coach John Pieri.

Lakeville South opens the South Suburban Conference season today at Eagan, in a match starting at 3:30 p.m.
