Lakeville South's Zane Peterson Wins 215 Pound State Title
Offseason preparation helped Peterson achieve his goal of a state championship.
Lakeville South senior Zane Peterson admits he’s always wanted to replicate Vikings defensive end Jared Allen’s signature hogtie celebration, but the situation has never been quite right.
“I’ve always wanted to do it, but in football you get a 15-yard penalty, and you get in trouble with the coaches and all that mumbo-jumbo,” Peterson said. “So I figured I might as well save it for a state title.”
On Saturday, he got his chance.

The Cougars’ senior won the 215-pound Class AAA state wrestling championship at the Xcel Energy Center, defeating Hasting’s Isaac Eichmann by fall at 2:47 to take home the title.
And true to form, he performed the hogtie to celebrate.

“I’m sure (Allen) would be proud of me,” Peterson joked.
But it was all business for Peterson since last year’s loss in the state semifinals. He put in the extra hours in the offseason, the extra five-mile runs and cleaned up his diet in order to get back to Saturday’s championship match.
Once he did, there was no stopping him.
Peterson went 4-0 at this year’s state tournament, picking up two pins and earning the right to stand atop the championship podium
His teammate, Tom Peterson, finished sixth in the 189-pound weight class. He lost to Cambridge-Isanti’s Derek Swanson in the fifth place match.
Lakeville North had two individuals compete at Saturday’s state meet. Zach Goldberg finished third at 125 pounds, defeating Hasting’s Eric Bauer 19-7 in the third place match. His teammate, Anton Kalista, took sixth place after losing to Mounds View’s Richard Carlson 3-1 at 160 pounds.
