On September 23, 1862 the Battle of Wood Lake marked the last significant fighting in the Dakota War between warriors of the Sioux Nation and US Army troops. The "Great Sioux Uprising" had national impact and the battle is considered a significant part of the US Civil War. The battlefield is one of only two protected Civil War sites in Minnesota. History's veracity is often questionable and can be controversial. Recognizing this, the Wood Lake Battlefield Preservation Association was formed to preserve the site and the history of the Dakota War with respectful consideration of both the Sioux and territorial settlement perspectives and interests during this conflict. The David Geister painting shown here, "Surprise at Wood Lake", was commissioned by the Association and the sale of prints supports their mission. We enjoyed framing this limited edition example in a traditional design with an engraved title plate.
