Older Adults' Transportation Needs in Dakota County

New Dakota County Study Highlights Older Adults' Transportation Needs; DARTS Offers Transit Solution and Seeks Volunteers

In collaboration with local housing providers and Dakota County’s Community Development Agency, the Dakota County Communities for a Lifetime, aging initiative conducted a survey last year to gain understanding of the barriers older adults face with transportation. In recently released findings, respondents expressed preferences for regular service without advance booking required, greater affordability, and a convenient schedule. The survey focused on residents of Lakeville (one of the largest cities in Dakota County) living in multi-unit housing and found that more than one-third of respondents who currently do not drive were unfamiliar with available transportation services.

DARTS, a nonprofit serving seniors and their families in Dakota County, recognized these needs and launched DARTS Ride Connection which provides door-to-door transportation service for residents (age 60+). This service now offers next-day scheduling for improved convenience if riders call by 3 p.m. the day before. Call 651-234-2281 for more details.

Other key recommendations in the Dakota County report include: Develop a communication campaign to promote services and address concerns; Explore volunteer driver models to fill transportation gaps; Pursue partnerships to meet transportation needs; Pursue new technology solutions, such as Mobility Management; Collect more information from a broader cross-section of older adults, Boomers, and other residents who might use transportation options if available. Through its mobility management project, DARTS is currently researching solutions to these recommendations. DARTS is seeking older adult volunteers to provide feedback on current transit options, facilitate peer discussion groups and discuss what a one-stop transportation resource website would look like. Volunteers receive paid training and light meals; time commitments are minimal. If you are interested in participating or have questions, please contact DARTS’ Mobility Management Program Director, Courtney L.B. Whited, at 651-234-2279 or courtney.whited@darts1.org.

The report was prepared by Jess Luce, Communities for a Lifetime Supervisor, Dakota County Public Health Department. For more information about the survey, contact him by e-mail at jess.luce@co.dakota.mn.us or by phone at 651-554-6104.
