Stakes High in Lakeville Resident's Bid for Asylum in U.S.

A court ruling means Francis Gathungu and his family may be able to stay instead of being deported to Kenya, according to St. Paul Pioneer Press columnist Rubén Rosario.

The fate of many people seeking asylum in the United States from gang violence in their home countries may hang on what happens in the case of Lakeville resident Francis Gathungu, St. Paul Pioneer Press columnist Rubén Rosario reported.

Gathungu, 55, is an immigrant from Kenya, where he says he and his family became the targets of a dangerous gang after he was tricked into getting involved with their activities.

A recent favorable ruling from the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed earlier setbacks in his case and could pave the way for wider acceptance of asylum applications from people in Gathungu's situation, according to the Pioneer Press.
