Vacation Memories

Taking a cruise makes a wonderful vacation. One of the fun activities on a cruise ship is the art auction. And among the most popular artists for these events is Linda LeKinff. Her distinctive style and the unique 3 dimensional printing technique used for her prints make each piece interesting.

We thought we would show you this LeKinff image as an illustration of several framing techniques that are appropriate for a fine art piece obtained on a vacation cruise. While some factory made mats come with a fabric surface, a hand-wrapped fabric mat is noticeably richer looking. It will generally have greater texture and the covered edges look much nicer than the bare edges of a cut mat. The natural linen used for this piece actually picks up a small amount of color from the substrate mat, which was planned to better highlight the colors in the art.

In order to better define the art, a fillet (a frame within the frame) that matches the main outer frame is used around the mat opening. In this case the steel color pulls out the dark lines that are characteristic of LeKinff's work and creates a defining edge around the entire picture. The textures of the fabric and metallic finish on the frame and fillet accentuate the 3D effect of the painted areas in the art. This custom design is unique but intended to be timeless in its presentation.
